Influenza or Flu Types
Influenza or Flu, is a respiratory illness that is caused by a virus. Three types of Influenza or Flu viruses exist:
- Infuenza A
- Influenza B
- Influenza C
Types A and B viruses cause seasonal epidemics and Type C influenza virus causes mild respiratory illness. The Flu virus is highly contagious. It is usually spread through coughs, sneezes or by touch of a person who is infected.
Symptoms of Flu:
Shivers
High temperature
Cold sweats
Painful joints and limbs
Tiredness or fatigue
Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
Gastro-intestinal symptoms
Complications caused by Flu:
Bacterial Pneumonia
Dehydration
Congestive Heart Failure
Asthma
Diabetes
Sinus problems
Ear infections
Treatment and Management:
Avoiding contact with other people
Staying at home
Taking rest
Consuming plenty of liquids
Washing your hands
ICD-10-CM coding for Flu is as follows:
In ICD-10-CM, 21 codes are present in several subcategories for influenza:
Influenza due to certain identified influenza viruses J09 :
- Influenza due to identified novel influenza A virus with pneumonia J09.X1
- Influenza due to identified novel influenza A virus with other respiratory manifestations J09.X2
- Influenza due to identified novel influenza A virus with gastrointestinal manifestations J09.X3
- Influenza due to identified novel influenza A virus with other manifestations J09.X9
Each of those four codes includes instructional note:
Code also if applicable, associated: Lung abscess, Other specified type of pneumonia
Reviewing the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting for Influenza due to certain identified influenza viruses are important while coding Influenza. Only confirmed cases of influenza due to certain identified influenza viruses (category J09), and due to other identified influenza virus (category J10) should be coded.
Confirmed cases does not require documentation of positive laboratory testing specific for avian or other novel influenza A or other identified influenza virus. The provider?s diagnostic statement should state :
- Avian influenza, or other novel influenza A, for category J09
- Particular identified strain of influenza, such as H1N1 or H3N2, but not identified as novel or variant, for category J10
Influenza due to other identified influenza virus J10
Influenza due to unidentified influenza virus J11
